Accommodation for International Students

The International Office at the Engineering College aims to provide good quality accommodation at a reasonable price for our foreign exchange students.

How and when to apply for accommodation?

If you want the International office to help you with accommodation, please indicate it on the application form. The International Office will try to help you and meet your requests if you apply before deadline (1 May or 1 November).

It is of paramount importance that you enroll in good time, as the housing situation in Aarhus is always chaotic at the beginning of a new semester.

Rooms

The rooms are single study bedrooms with access to kitchen, bath, washing machine and tumble drier. The rooms are furnished, but no duvet, pillow nor bed linen. Be aware that the the standard of the rooms and the furnitures can vary from room to room and from student hall to student hall.

What can I expect to pay in rent?

The rent for a single room varies between 2000 DKK - 3000 DKK per month (Aug. 2010) plus a 4000 DKK deposit, be aware that you have to pay the rent for 6 months in each semester. (This does not apply for sublet rooms)

The rent must be paid in advance at the beginning of each month on a special Giro payment form. This can be done at the post office or at the bank. The deposit must be paid to the Engineering College before June 15th for the autumn semester and December 15th for the spring semester.

The first rent must be paid to the Engineering College upon arrival.

Please note:
In order to be able to get rooms for our International Students we have to reserve the rooms for long periods. When you apply for a semester and wish for us to assist you in finding accommodation, it will be available to you for a certain period.

The periods are: From July 15th to January 15th (autumn semester)
From January 15th to July 15th (spring semester)

This means that you are obliged to pay for the rent in this period.  It also means that your tenancy is binding so that you are obliged to keep the room for the whole period.
(These obligations do not apply for sublet rooms)

If we have rented a room for you, but you for some reason choose not to make use of it and therefore do not move in, you will be obliged to pay for the mandatory 6 weeks' notice.
Once we have rented a room for you at a student hall, it is in general not possible to switch rooms.

How much is the deposit typically?

You are required to pay a deposit of 4000 DKK to the College before 15 June for the autumn semester and before 15 December for the spring semester. (Does not apply for sublet rooms)

Any damage to your room will be deducted from this deposit and the remaining sum (if any) will be transferred to your account app. 8 weeks after you have moved out.

Finding accommodation on your own

It is normally very difficult to find accommodation on your own, as there is a general shortage of rooms suitable for students in the city - especially at the beginning of a semester.

You are, however, welcome to take care of accommodation yourself, but we ask you to inform the International Office that you will take care of it yourself.

You should start looking at least a month prior to your arrival.
