Course description: CD-DIP 2012
Conceptual Design and Development of Innovative Products (CD-DIP)
Extent
5 ECTS credits
Learning objectives
The overall goal with this course is to improve the student's ability to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries in an innovative fashion. At the end of this course, the student should be able to:
-
Cooperate in multidisciplinary team activities;
-
Operate in a conceptual design process;
-
Demonstrate interpersonal skills during team development;
-
Propose and justify the value of new innovative, technical solutions;
-
Conduct disciplinary analysis of a real-life industrial problem;
-
Present disciplinary analysis to stakeholders with different disciplinary backgrounds;
-
Design disciplinary interfaces with other disciplinary products.
Requirements
All students must have a background in mechanical engineering, electrical and software engineering, industrial design or human technologies engineering.
The students must have approx. one year left of their studies.
Contents
This course is very untraditional because students are taken out of their conventional class-room environment with teacher-led learning and placed in a real, dynamic industrial environment with a problem-based learning focus in a multidisciplinary setting. This course runs for three intensive weeks at an industrial site. During the first week, focus is on how you get from an open idea for a new, multidisciplinary product to the use innovation to come up with a concept and a prototype. In the remaining two weeks, focus is on how you take the conceptual idea to the stage of a technical feasibility study and prototyping for a final concept presentation. This means that different disciplinary analyses must be conducted and, in particular, the interfaces between the different disciplines must be agreed upon and described.
Education Form
Problem-based learning in an industrial environment on a multidisciplinary project.
Approximately 10% lectures and 90% team work.
Evaluation
Evaluation form: Oral examination and compulsory teamwork participation.
Marking scale: passed/not passed.
