Firewall IT
What is a firewall?
A firewall is, as the name suggests, a wall between our internal network and the internet. This wall protects the network against unwanted traffic from the internet so that unallowed access to our network and data is prevented.
Which limits does the firewall bring? Our network is only open for the services IHA provides, e.g. to employees and students. It is still possible to access your drives from home through the Userportal, receive your mail through POP3 etc.
From within the network, you can browse the internet through the proxy server and reveice mail from the internet through POP3 or IMAP.
It is no longer possible to use various remote administration tools, various chat-clients (see below) etc. This is because every open hole potentially can be used by a virus/backdoor to infect our and other networks.
What about Messenger, ICQ, AIM, IRC etc.?
As described above, it is no longer possible to use various chat-clients on our network, but as it is possible to view ordinary websites through our proxyserver, it is also possible to use various webbased services.
Webclients:
ICQ: http://go.icq.com
Microsoft: http://people.live.com.
Both clients have the most nessesary features.
If you want a locally installed chat client, it needs to be configured to communicate through our proxy.
Everything above is also valid for OPENNET since the clients have private IP addresses assigned, and therefor can't use services on the internet in any way without the proxy server.
Can we have port xxxx opened so that we can use service yyyy?
If you in your project work or such have special needs to have a service opened through the firewall, please contact the head of department or your teacher. He/she will contact the IT-department and try to meet your needs. We need information about which services need to be opened, from which machines the access is needed and for how long.
