Practical Information

Purpose

In connection with the an internship, the the students should:

  • develop creative skills, a sense of entities and the ability to cooperate

  • be motivated to adopt an engineering attitude to subjects and other study elements in the subsequent year of study

  • familiarise themselves with the organisation of the company, working conditions, possibilities, limitations and other terms, as may be experienced as a working engineer

  • gain insight into how the theory acquired in their studies is applied to practical problems

  • be motivated to take a professional engineering approach to the studies

Training period

Typically, the engineering training takes place in the students' 5th semester, which means after two years of theoretical studies and four weeks of intensive training in a workshop. After the internship, the students have one year with obtional courses and the bachelor project before they can call themselves Bachelor of Engineering.

The duration of the training is five months in the following periods:

  • autumn semester, from 1 August to 31 December

  • spring semester, from 1 February to 30 June

Requirements to the company

The Aarhus University School of Engineering requires that the students participate in carrying out engineering activities.  The company has to appoint an employee as primary supervisor and contact person for the student.

Contact between the company and the Engineering College

Prior to the training period, the Placement Officer at the College will be contact person for the company. During the training period, a Trainee Supervisor appointed by the Aarhus University School of Engineering will be the contact person for the company. During the training period, the Trainee Supervisor will visit the company and the trainee (with the exception of distant locations).

Trainee's application

The trainee's choice of company takes place in close coordination with the Placement Officer. Upon choice of potential company, the student prepares an application. The Placement Officer contacts the company and forwards – if agreed – the application. If accepted, students may be interviewed according to the company's normal procedures. If accepted, an educational agreement is signed by both parties, and a copy is forwarded to the Aarhus University School of Engineering. This agreement may be supplemented by the company's own employment form.

Conditions of employment

The trainee is employed according to the company's normal conditions. Especially the following should be emphasised: The student has no claims on holidays during the training period, but holiday allowance is earned according to standard rules. The company must take out a general labour injury insurance that covers the trainee.

Time off

The trainee has the right to have up to 3 days off for participation in resit examinations a.o.

Salary

Salary is paid according to an agreement between the company and the trainee.

Reporting

During the training period, the trainee must prepare a report, with the following main sections:
A “Placement Report section”, describing the company and the work carried out by the trainee (typically 2 -5 pages). A “Technical Report section”, describing in details a well-defined field of the trainee's work (typically 5 - 15 pages).

Approval of engineering training

The training is assessed (approved/not approved) by the Trainee Supervisor. The basis for the assessment is the report and an interview with the student (by the supervisor), and possible feedback from the company.
