Residence permit / Visa
Non-EU nationals must apply for a residence permit/visa in their own country well in advance of going to Denmark. Before issuing a one-year residence permit / visa, the immigration office (through the Danish Embassy) will ask students from outside the Nordic and EU-countries to have funds corresponding to 50,000 DKK (6,200 Euro) at their disposal.
Students must be able to document that 1) they have the full legal rights of disposal of the amount, and that 2) these funds are available to them in Denmark.
Nationals of EU countries are entitled to stay in Denmark for three months without a residence permit. As most exchange students will exceed this time, they must apply for a residence permit as soon as they arrive in Denmark. When you arrive in Denmark, you will be met by a student (Buddy) who will be assigned to help you.
Your Buddy will accompany you to the "Statsforvaltning" (residence permit office) the first day of your stay. For this purpose, please bring your passport or identity card and one passport-size photographs. You will be asked to fill in an application form before going to the office.

When you have received your residence permit, you must contact your Buddy, who will accompany you to the Registration Office ("Folkeregister"). For this purpose, please bring your residence permit and your passport or identity card.
At the Registration Office, you must fill in a form and choose a local general practitioner while you are here. After a few days, you will receive your CPR number (Personal number), which you will need for many purposes (at the doctor, at the bank, library, students' registration office etc.). After app. two weeks you will receive a yellow medical card. You must carry the residence permit and the medical card with you at all times.
Apart from this, you must obtain health insurance from your own country (E 111 form).
Everybody who is staying in Denmark is entitled to hospital assistance in case of accidents, emergency illness or emergent worsening of an illness.
EEA nationals who are covered by the public health insurance of an EEA country will be covered by the public health insurance when they move to Denmark. If you move to Denmark from a non-Nordic country which is not a member of the EC/EAA, you will normally have a six week quarantine before having access to public health services.
